The Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry Study
A 2017 study by the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry found evidence that CBD has the potential to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. In this study, 57 men participated in a simulated public speaking test. Members of this study were either given a placebo, a dose of 150mg CBD, 300mg CBD, or 600mg of CBD before they gave their speeches.
The group that received the 300mg dose had the most significantly reduced anxiety. A study on mice revealed that CBD has similar effects as the antidepressant imipramine, though human trials are still needed to confirm whether or not humans would have the same reaction.
The FDA & Epidiolex
In 2018, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of CBD under the brand name Epidiolex to treat seizures resulting from rare forms of epilepsy-Lennox-Gastut syndrome and Dravet syndrome for patients over the age of 2. Three major well-vetted studies support the FDA’s decision. In these clinical trials, 516 with these syndromes were given either Epidolex or a placebo. The studies revealed that Epidolex, when taken with other prescribed medication significantly decreased the patient’s frequency of seizures, compared to the group who was given the placebo.
Other research studies indicate that CBD may be beneficial for symptom management for conditions related to PTSD, diabetes, and arthritis. It has also been shown to be helpful for alleviating chronic pain and nausea.
